The general tests of electric motors:1

The comprehensive inspection and maintenance of the motor not only includes the routine motor cleaning, the measurement of tolerance , the replacement of bearings, the inspection of leads, but also includes some test items. Below I make a simple summary of the general test items of the motor.

The inspection test items of three-phase asynchronous motor include: insulation resistance measurement, winding dc resistance measurement, voltage withstand test and no-load test, etc.

1. Measurement of insulation resistance:
Measuring the insulation resistance between each phase winding and each phase winding on the housing is the most convenient and non-destructive inspection of insulation.Though these inspection, it detect whether the winding insulation is seriously affected by moisture or has serious defects. The following defects can also be found effectively: the overall insulation quality is poor;Insulation become damp; There are penetrating conductive channels between the poles;Poor insulation surface condition. The following defects cannot be found by measuring the insulation resistance: local defects in the insulation, such as non-penetrating local damage, bubbles, delamination, etc.
In the inspection test, only the cold insulation resistance of the stator winding before the motor runs is measured, including the insulation resistance between the winding phases and the insulation resistance of each phase winding to the housing (ground). For a wound motor, the insulation resistance of the rotor winding needs to be measured.
The measurement method usually use hand-type megohm meter. For low-voltage motor, 500V megohm meter is used for measurement, while for high-voltage motor, 1000V megohm meter and 2500V megohm meter are used for measurement.Measuring insulation resistance before need to dismantle the motor wiring outside, in the process of the measuring speed of megger must maintain basic constant (120 r/min), after shake the megger for a minute, read out the pointer indicating values. For low voltage motor , insulation resistance should not be less than 0.5 M Ω, and for the motor which had replaced winding should be not less than 5 M Ω.For high voltage motor, should be not less than 1 m Ω/kV.
For large motors, the insulation resistance can be measured to determine whether the winding is damp, and its absorption ratio coefficient R60/R15 should be no less than 1.3, where R60 and R15 are the insulation resistance values read out when the meohmeter shakes 60s and 15s respectively.
The absorption ratio K=R60/R15, K always is more than 1 and the larger the absorption ratio is, the more significant the absorption phenomenon is and the better the insulation performance is. The absorption ratio is the ratio of insulation resistance of the same sample at two different times, excluding the influence of insulation structure and volume size.Generally, absorption ratio K≥1.3 is taken as the standard for good insulation condition of equipment. In order to accurately judge, insulation resistance R and absorption ratio K should be considered simultaneously. Only when both meet the requirements, can the insulation of equipment be considered good.
Other inspection refer to the followed articles.

The general tests of electric motors:2

2. Determination of dc resistance of winding: 1) Significance of dc resistance measurement: The dc resistance of the windings in cold state is one of the main parameters of three-phase asynchronous motors. By comparing the measured value of the resistance of the windings with the design value, it is possible to check whether the windings have broken wires and short-circuit between turns, whether the welding parts have virtual welding or open welding, whether the contact points have bad contact and other phenomena. 2) Dc resistance measurement method: Measuring the dc resistance of the motor should be done when the winding is cold. First, place the motor indoors for a period of time, and measure the temperature of the motor winding end or core with a thermometer. At this time, the measured temperature is the actual temperature of the winding in the cold state. If the temperature of the winding end or core cannot be measured, the temperature of the housing may be substituted

Comparison of structure motor with internal rotor and external rotor

In general, the stator of the motor is on the outside and the rotor is on the inside. In a conventional brush dc motor, the stator field is on the outside and the rotor armature is on the inside. Brushless dc motor appeared, so that the rotating armature from the inside to the outside, from the rotor into a stator; And the original stationary stator permanent magnet went inside, and from the stator become the rotor. This kind of structure is called an "internal rotor structure". In practical use, sometimes in order to meet the special technical requirements of some electromechanical, the motor stator armature is made inside, and the rotor with permanent magnet is made outside. We call this structure "external rotor structure", or "internal stator structure". In the design of brushless dc motor, the external rotor structure and the internal rotor structure have their own advantages and disadvantages. The differences in motor characteristics between the

Traction motor for electric vehicle: induction motor, permanent magnet motor, who is the future direction?

In the era of fuel cars, we often hear the battle between natural inspirations and turbocharged engines. And in the era of electric cars, there is also a clear debate between electric motors. After the test of the market, there are two kinds of mainstream electric motors on the market at present, one is induction motor (also known as asynchronous ac motor), the other is permanent magnet motor. Induction motor is a kind of motor which has the rotor rotation powered by magnetic torque created by the physical interaction of stator winding magentic field and the induction current generated rotor magnetic field. Tesla Model S and Model X are representatives of induction motor applications. The permanent magnet motor mainly refers to the permanent magnet synchronous motor, and the biggest difference with the induction motor in structure is that the rotor is permanent magnet structure, rather than wound by the electric coil. Which is better, the induction motor or the permanent mag
